Misalignment May Be The Real Cause Of Employee Burnout

While business is booming in many sectors, so is burnout among employees. According to DHR Global’s “Workforce Trends Report 2026,” 83% of surveyed workers reported some level of burnout leading into 2026. While most people are ready to blame chronic workplace stress, the truth is more qualitative. Burnout is often less about hours worked and more about misalignment.

​Whether someone’s work matches their values or energizes them has a significant impact on their level of engagement and satisfaction. There are people who work long hours but report high engagement because they’re completing meaningful, strength-aligned work. On the other hand, those working moderate hours in low-autonomy, unclear or values-mismatched environments are likely to disengage or experience low job satisfaction. This tells us that a sense of connectedness and the conditions we work within are integral to the employee experience.
